Using Hashtags

You've got your Instagram all set up, maybe even made a few posts and now you're ready to share those posts with the world. Using hashtags can expand your audience and garner you more likes while increasing audience engagement.

Choosing Your Hashtags

  1. Type the tag you're thinking about using into the search bar of Instagram this will show you how many posts have been posted with that hashtag. The higher the number of posts, the more likely people are to follow that tag.
  2. Choose hashtags relevant to your brand, for example, as a travel agent you may want to use tags like #InstaTravel If you are a restaurant you may choose something like #yum or #foodporn.
  3. Avoid using gimmicks such as #LikeForLike or #Follow as it can make you appear spammy and won't actually gain you engaged followers who are interested in your content.
  4. Check out what other local businesses or businesses in your niche are using to get an idea of where to start.

Using Hashtags

  1. Once you've picked a few hashtags that you want to use all the time, copy them into a note on your phone, making it easy to copy and paste them when needed.

  2. Post your hashtags as a comment beneath your original post. This will allow people to discover you without clogging up your post. Alternately, you could always write them on your post but make 4-5 lines with a - or . then enter so that they can only be visible when a user presses "See More"
  3. Using long hashtags like #OMGlookwhatIjustatesogood won't gain you any followers and are annoying for people to read. Try to keep it short and sweet like #Yummy
  4. Use local hashtags. Some of the best tags can be relevant to where you are, for example #ExploreNB / #ExploreNL
